Stop the cake sides from over baking
If you are baking a cake in a deep tin the sides can brown too much. Not so good for making the cake look pretty.
Wrap the sides of the tin in damp newspaper to avoid this. Works for cakes baked at 160 degrees celsius or less. See the video below.
You may have seen this tip for Christmas cakes but I use this for sponge cakes too. It stops the sides from being too crusty!
