Devoted to Bakes – Our Covid Story
March 12th 2020 left us and the rest of the country reeling, as the first lockdown changed both the business and our family life. Overnight, our face to face workshops and events were packed into boxes, unaware that this is where they would still remain. In an effort to connect with others and give parents and kids time to learn and create together, we hosted our live Bake Alongs. We started with the intention of connecting bubbles, having fun and breaking the tech wall. However, intention and reality can be quite different when you navigate tech and broadcasting from home. Ironically, everyday was a school day, as we learned more about camera angles, ways to interact and share our passion online. Within weeks, baking bubbles from across the world joined us to mix, knead and share the craft of baking. They say way leads on to way, and that was the case with the creation of the Devoted to Bakes Online Baking school, where we guided our classes of students through different courses, exploring the skills, art and science of baking. As our students learned, our range of equipment (cameras and lights) and production know-how also developed, enabling us to open up a new aspect of the business, providing online courses and workshops. In the future, we will reunite and expand our community of bakers both online and via our face to face workshops and events. Until then, the lights and cameras are definitely on, while the boxes wait patiently.
